Your eLLM settings

By Paul Flanders ·

The article explains how to customise eLLM settings to suit personal and organisational needs, including managing memory, setting response language, and connecting personal tools. It highlights permission requirements for certain features.

What this product is for

Settings let you tailor eLLM to you and your organisation. Most of the page is informational, but a few optional features give certain users extra control over how the assistant behaves.

Main features

  • View your account information.
  • Review and control your personal memory, the lasting facts eLLM remembers about you.
  • Set your preferred response language so the assistant replies in the language most natural to you.
  • Set a company system context that shapes how answers are written (if permitted).
  • Connect your own personal tool services so the assistant can use them just for you (if permitted).

How to use it

Viewing your account

Open the settings page to see the details of the account you are signed in with. This is useful for confirming who you are logged in as and which access you have.

Managing your memory

In the Memory area you can see the lasting facts eLLM has remembered about you, such as your team or how you like answers written, which it uses to personalise later replies. You can:

  • Read the list of stored facts.
  • Remove any single item, or clear them all.
  • Turn memory on or off for your account. With it off, eLLM neither uses nor learns facts; anything saved is kept for if you turn it back on.

You never have to set memory up; it learns quietly from your conversations. See the Personal memory article for the full picture.

Setting your response language

In the Language area you can choose which language the assistant replies in. Select a language and save; from your next message onwards the assistant writes its answers in that language. The setting is personal it only affects your account, not your colleagues.

Keep in mind that the setting changes the language of the assistant's output only. Your documents are searched in their original language, so questions and documents in the same language give the best results. Quality also depends on the model installed; small local models have limited support for minority languages. See the Response language article for the full picture.

Setting company system context

If your account has the set system context permission, you can enter a company system context. This is a piece of background guidance (for example a preferred tone, role, or standing instruction) that is applied when answers are generated.

  1. Open the settings page.
  2. Find the company system context field.
  3. Enter your guidance and save.

If your account does not have this permission, the field is not available, and any context you might try to set is ignored.

Connecting personal tool services (Personal MCP links)

If your account has the manage personal MCP permission, you can connect your own tool services under Personal MCP links. MCP is the standard eLLM uses to let the assistant call external tools. A personal link is private to you:

  • Its tools are available only to you in chat.
  • Its tools run automatically when used; they do not wait for admin approval, because the connection is yours.
  1. Open the settings page and go to Personal MCP links.
  2. Add a service by giving it a name and its web address (and an access key if it needs one).
  3. ELLM checks the service and discovers the tools it offers.
  4. The tools then become available to you in chat.

You can remove a personal link at any time. See the MCP article for a fuller explanation of how tools work.

Common tasks

  • Confirm your login: open settings to view your account details.
  • Get replies in another language: open settings, find Language, and select your preference.
  • Set a standing instruction for answers: enter a company system context (if permitted).
  • Add your own tool: register a personal MCP link (if permitted).
  • Remove a tool: delete the personal MCP link you added.

Things to know

  • Company context and personal tool connections are permission-controlled. If you do not see them, your group has not been granted those capabilities.
  • Service names for personal tool links must be unique across the whole system, so you may need to choose a distinct name.
  • A personal tool link's tools are only ever available to you; other users cannot see or use them.

Troubleshooting

  • I can't set company context: this needs the set system context permission. Ask your administrator to grant it to your group.
  • I can't add a personal tool: this needs the manage personal MCP permission. Ask your administrator.
  • My tool name was refused: the name is already taken. Service names must be unique; pick another.
  • My tool isn't appearing in chat: confirm the service address and access key are correct and that eLLM successfully discovered its tools when you added it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a system context?

It is background guidance applied when answers are generated, such as a tone or standing instruction. It does not change your documents or permissions.

Who can see my personal tool connections?

Only you. Their tools are private to your account and run automatically when used.

Why don't I have all of these options?

Company context and personal tools are granted per group by an administrator. Without those permissions, the options are hidden.

Is a personal MCP link the same as an organisation tool?

No. Organisation tools are set up by administrators for groups. Personal links are set up by you, for you only.

Summary

The settings page shows your account and lets you personalise how the assistant behaves. Everyone can set a response language. Those with the right permissions can also set company context for answers and connect their own private tools.
